| subject: | Re: ATM Perplexing Polishing Problem! |
From: "Mel Bartels" To: Reply-To: "Mel Bartels" >>> 1)How do I remove the pits in the center, without making the hole even bigger? 2) Will the pits go away eventually if I go back to TOT with 1/3 normal strokes? (I tried this for 1 hour of polishing, and could not see a difference) 3) Should I quit trying to polish the center and use a modified pressure or small tool to bring everything down to the level of the center hole? 4) Do I need to bring everything to a sphere, or can I somehow modify what I think is an oblate figure? 5) At what point is the lap too thin? I hate to start a new lap since this one seems to fit well, but I want the best mirror I can make. Thanks for the help! <<< I always recommend that one never tests the mirror figure before polishing is complete. Incomplete polishing has a particular set of figures that can cause a lot of worry and wasted time. The crucial question here is how pitty are these pits? Normally you will never polish out pits in your lifetime. If they are the sort of tiny white specks that remain after flash polish, then yes, they will come out.
