Aging wiring in the world's airliner fleet has been an issue for a while now.
Its what prompted the initial development of the arc-fault circuit breakers
now making their way into residential wiring standards. The aircraft
industry
was looking for arc-fault breakers a decade before the residential wiring
industry took notice.
The rewiring cost in aircraft is so high they're willing to run it till it fails
and let the special breaker try to prevent subsequent fires. Doesn't help
much with a spark in an explosive atmosphere though...
