If the surfaces are not quite spherical, then polishing is probably not what is required. Make sure the edge is smoothly bevelled so that microscopic glass chips don't cause large pits, and do a half hour of 5 micron, ensuring the drag is smooth and even at all angles around the mirror with all angles of the tool. Only when it is can you move on to polishing with confidence. That half hour will save you several of high drag polishing.
