subject: M11F and USR V.34+

JP> Has anyone who is connecting a NetComm M11F with a USR
JP> V.34+ noticed that the connect speeds is always 26400?

LE> Amazing. I never managed to get an M11F to connect using V.FC,
LE> I always had to lock down to V.32bis. Interstate, intrastate,
LE> or ISD, to various USRs. I hate the bloody things (USR V.34

PC> This is strange as i have both a M11F and a USR Courier and don't
PC> have the problems your having, I've called M11F's with the courier and

LE> It can't be my line because :

I dont believe you have the evidence that it cant be.

LE> (a) it happens on all the lines into my
LE> house (not that that's much of a test)

Yeah, it proves very little if the problem is just the length
and guage of the cable back to the exchange from your house etc.
All that proves is that its not an INDIVIDUAL line of yours.

LE> (b) to non-USR modems, my M11F gets great connects.

That doesnt prove anything much either. Its not uncommon for a particular
combination of modems to exhibit a problem with a particular line
characteristic. Until you actually measure your lines with a Courier on each
end and compare that with the same thing for those who dont see that problem...

LE> I have tried any number of NetComm firmware revisions.

We've just seen the rather hilarious example of Bill Grimsley saying
essentially the same thing calling Pauls Netcom M34F, over a variety
of Sportster V34 roms, with rather obscene handshaking results, have
that problem VANISH with the latest rom, fourth he has got from memory.

He ALSO has a rather poor line to his exchange, explaining now why only
he was seeing that dreadful handshaking result with that USR/M34F pair.

It also now turns out it was the problem with the Sportster V32bis/Spirit
handshaking failures too. Which no one else ever saw between a Sportster
V32bis/Spirit, even over many hundreds of daily calls now. Bills dud line.

Very clearly deficient when MEASURED with a pair of Couriers.

LE> It's not isolated to this M11F either,

But presumably almost entirely Rockwell based.

LE> I recall posting some detailed results of EXPENSIVE tests which
LE> indicate clearly to me that a USR is not to be trusted if you're
LE> paying timed rates for the call, unless both ends are USR.

Yeah, it is pretty clear that its still going to do better USR/USR
with a poor session bandwidth, and the OS calls invariably are worse.

Even USR/USR, I get MUCH worse results to the US than inside Aust.
And a very pronounced difference thats repeatable with the 4 different
ways of calling the US, Telstra voice and fax and Optus voice and fax.
