Apologies for the slow thanks, Bruce. (IAE, I never do so unless I
have something extra to add. It wastes bandwidth :)
Slow and fast were just my own way of differing between the two menu
choices. I could have used 'SCFN' and 'ALL OTHERS'.

First, SCFN's docs specifically requested not to use a fast modem
hoping their own 2400's would 'negotiate' yours down to that speed.
I tried forcing the fast modem to 2400. It didn't work, so I took
them at their word and kept the old external 2400. So now I had two
modems, on two ports, and two versions of Telix.
What do you mean by a 'locked port'?
Yes, XON/XOFF sw flow was off. CTS/RTS hw flow was on. DSR/DTR hw
flow was off.
Developments since then: Suddenly I couldn't log on with the 2400
any more either. After a week or so of this, I d/l'd a copy of Juno
and asked SCFN's techdesk when they'd be up again. They said they'd
never been down, but had bought some new 28.8's, so I should now use
my fast modem and come in at a faster speed, since *some* older
2400's were now having trouble connecting.
I tried and tried with the new modem, but the problem persisted. I
have no trouble connecting at all, at any speed up to 28.8. But
that's as far as it goes. I get CONNECT 19200, for example, the
status line says VT102 19200 N81 and Online. But no welcome screen,
no prompt, nothing. I had to Alt-H and go to the TBCS BBS to ask if
anyone else in Pinellas County was getting on-line okay.
At this point I feel convinced that the problem is at their end.
Something wrong with their answering provisions. How can they not
know, you wonder?
Well, maybe people on the Tampa side of the bay aren't having the
same problem. And maybe there aren't many people on the Pinellas side
who use the system in any case. And maybe those who do use it just
shrugged it off because they prefer their Explorers and Navigators.
I, however, cannot shrug it off. My rig is a 386/20 with 4MB RAM,
(non-expandable AFAICS), and 512K Video RAM.
I thought of trying one of the DOS Internet browsers I've seen
mention of, but I was advised strongly against it.
OBTW, another cause for delay in replying was that TBCS lost its FIDO
feed a couple of times in the interim, and I thought that if I'd had
any replies they'd have got lost.
Again, thanks for your reply.
