As Dennis Menard indicated, most of the Harper novels are set in California 
and most of the Travis McGee novels in Florida.   Harper is also very much in 
the Marlowe tradition.
Incidentally, Ross MacDonald is a pen-name for Kenneth Millar.  His wife, 
Marbaret Millar, has also written mystery novels an since she began first, 
her husband felt he had to use a different name.
