While tripping merrily through the mail, Scott Mcgowan was overheard
DD> Well, Your collection starts where mine ends (I collect late 40's to
DD> late 60's) but yeah, it's a great hobby.
SM> Yeh, it's a great hobby, but it's depressing when you can't find what
SM> you're looking for, and when you do, the price can be
SM> astronomical!!!!!
I find most of my nicest pieces at garage sales, and even thrift shops.
If there's something I MUST have (e.g. a 45 of Ertha Kitt doing "Santa Baby")
I will go to a dealer, but yes, prices can get a little steep. I've
even gotten good deals there though. Once I stopped in just as the dealer
was unloading a collection from his truck he'd just picked up. There
were about 500 78's he didn't particularly want to sort through, so
I got all of them for ten bucks. There was a lot of good vintage
there, nice copies of people like Pat Boone, The Platters, Rusty Draper,
even some Johnny Cash on Sun (no Elvis though), so I'd say I got my
money's worth.
One thing I like to do at rummage or garage sales, when someone has a
large quantity of 45's, I'll look at the first 20 or so, if there's anything
there that looks decent, I'll make an offer for the whole lot, (usually
about 5 or 10 cents a disc), then, I have a few pleasurable afternoons
just going through them picking out the pieces I don't have. The excess
goes out at my own next rummage sale.
