    Would that the standard were as clear as K&R [both editons]!

    Ah ... but did you get the day_of_year sorted out? And has anybody told
you yet that networking is usually done by one of the network operating
system calls? Those are a bit off-topic in this echo, but Tom allows some
leeway as long as it's brief and to the point and doesn't develop into a
thread, so try HelpPC by Dave Jurgens, (Int 0x21, Function 0x5f). If that
fails, try one of the MS-Dos (or other relevant operating system) manuals.
