Evening, Clay.
My favorite camps...Hmmmmm... I would have to say Treasure Island in
Pennsylvania. However, it really isn't "in" PA. It's in the middle of
the Delaware River separating PA from New Jersey. In case you're
wondering, yes, you have to boat your equipment onto the island. I've
been there many times, but the best time was during summer camp. The
camp had the troops perform night watch. Each troop, which "volunteered"
two or three scouts, scheduled for a specific night had two hours to
walk the island making sure everything was OK. The night our troop had
watch, the night sky was utterly brilliant with thousands of stars
visible. Also, when we reached the dock, there was a thick fog hovering
about 2 feet over the water.
Of course, the multitude of other activities at TI made the trip away
from home well worth it. I learned more about scouting at that camp
than anywhere else. FYI, Treasure Island is the birthplace of the Order
of the Arrow. At each summer camp, the OA inductees are led away to
their ordeal by a neat ceremony. Unfortunately, details escape me at
this time, but if you wish, I'll write about the ceremony in another
message when I do remember it.
I've never been to a ranch. You'll have to tell us about it.
Until next time...
Joe
