Amen, well said, Rachel. I enjoyed your posts. I might add that the parents
who don't show up for school things usually (and I do say *usually*) are the
ones who say "That's the school's problem." (Occasionally you'll find an
occasional parent who works in the evening and finds it difficult to get to
Open Houses, but is an active parent otherwise.)
In my teaching experience, and that of my mom, we found that often times the
problem kids were the ones whose parents didn't bother to show up for
anything, including the Parent-Teacher conference. A few times it was because
of a literacy problem (the parent couldn't read the note that went home), but
most of the time the excuses given were ridiculous.
