Cycle 12 Phase II Proposals
Inge Heyer and James Rhoads

The Cycle 12 Phase II deadline is May 16, 2003. Documents to
help observers in the preparation of the Phase II proposals
are available on our website. A summary of the most
important documents for WFPC2 programs can be found at
http://www.stsci.edu/instruments/wfpc2/wfpc2_quick.html

When looking for other WFPC2-specific documents, please
consult our homepage at
http://www.stsci.edu/instruments/wfpc2/wfpc2_top.html

In particular we'd like to point out the Phase II Updates
page at
http://www.stsci.edu/hst/programs

The Phase II Proposal Instructions can be found at
http://www.stsci.edu/hst/programs/hst/proposing/docs/p2pi.html

One notable change for Cycle 12 is the introduction of the
APT proposal preparation tool for Phase II, which will be
the default tool as of Cycle 12. Training videos, manuals,
and other information regarding APT are available at
http://apt.stsci.edu/phase2/
General information on APT is available at
http://apt.stsci.edu/

WFPC2 Filter Wavelengths in the Archive
Anton Koekemoer and Gabriel Brammer

The HST Archive / CDBS catalog contains a number of different
quantities that characterize the properties of each filter in
the WFPC2 filter set. These quantities include the "Central
Wavelength", which appears as a default output column in
archive searches, as well as the "Pivot Wavelength" and other
related quantities that are used to calculate photometric
keywords such as PHOTFLAM, which can be used to define the
zeropoints for WFPC2 photometry. The "Central Wavelength"
values have been unchanged since the launch of WFPC2. They are
not used to calculate any other quantities, yet have always
appeared as a default output column in archive searches. On
the other hand, quantities such as the Pivot Wavelength are
better defined and are also regularly updated whenever there
are changes to the system throughput tables in Synphot. There
have also been a few discrepancies between Central Wavelength
and other, more up-to-date quantities, which have on occasion
led to confusion. Therefore, the WFPC2 group, in conjunction
with personnel in charge of CDBS, have chosen to replace the
use of "Central Wavelength" with the use of "Pivot Wavelength".
The only effect that this will have is that, when archive
searches are performed, the wavelengths listed for filters will
now reflect the Pivot Wavelength. No other quantities are
affected by this change; in particular, photometric keywords
within the WFPC2 dataset headers will remain unchanged, since
they are already consistent with the Pivot Wavelength and other
regularly updated filter quantities. More details on this,
including a table comparing the old Central Wavelength with
the up-to-date Pivot Wavelength values for each filter, are
available at the following URL:

WFPC2 Cycle 9 Closure Report
A. M. Koekemoer, S. Baggett, S. Casertano, S. Gonzaga, I. Heyer,
and the WFPC2 Group

This report describes in detail the WFPC2 observations used
to maintain and improve the quality of WFPC2 calibrations
during Cycle 9, and their status at completion of the Cycle.

We draw your attention to these papers, based on WF/PC and
WFPC2 data, that have appeared since the last STAN, or will
appear in the next few months. This list includes all
