| subject: | California to ban light bulbs? |
From: "Rich Gauszka" I've switched from incandescent but Mark Muarry is full of it when he states that "We're not telling consumers what to do, we're ending a technology that's obsolete.". I wonder if California will have light bulb inspectors and an inspection tax? http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070201/NATION/702010345/102 2/POLITICS The common light bulb may be headed the way of penny candy, dime stores and eight-track rock 'n' roll tapes -- extinct. More than 100 years after Thomas Edison perfected the incandescent light bulb, two California lawmakers are pushing to make California the first state to ban it. Democratic Assemblyman Lloyd Levine said he wants to phase out the incandescent bulb in favor of the more energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulb. "They're cheaper for the consumer, they save the state money and they're better for the environment," Levine said of the energy-efficient bulbs. Republican State Sen. George Runner, however, said banning incandescent bulbs amounts to lawmakers dictating how people should live their lives. Levine's proposal would ban the sale of incandescent bulbs by 2012. Democratic Assemblyman Jared Huffman's bill would ban the bulbs by 2018. Unlike the bulbous-shaped traditional household light, compact fluorescent models look like squiggly swirls of light. Mark Murray, executive director of Californians Against Waste, said: "We're not telling consumers what to do, we're ending a technology that's obsolete." His group is sponsoring Huffman's bill. --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 5030/786 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
