Tom,

One thing you might consider is taking Rogers 8" achomate class at the
Telescope Optics Workshop coming up in March. This is going to be a one
time offered class for making a large achromats, 8" f/15 doublets.
Roger is an excellent teacher and extremely knowledable about lenses. The
three day class is a great opportunity to learn lens fabrication, tool
making, theory, and practical hands on experience. Consider you will be
in a class of 5
students and one excellent teacher. I dont know of any other classes
available in the past or future dedicated to such a project.
