I will only disagree with the "if at all" parenthetical. By the
early 1890s many banks, utilities, and manufacturers were offering pension
plans. According to the EBRI website, 15% of private-sector workers were
covered by a pension plan (http://www.ebri.org/facts/0398afact.htm).
