First, I should note that I left out "by 1940" after
"covered by a pension plan".

The major coverage were in heavy industry, like cars, tractors, airplanes,
etc. Most industries which used steel as a raw material also were covered.
Almost all public utilities (telephone, electric, gas) were also covered.
Many financial institutions also.

Most of this is from memory. I have some of it buried in boxes somewhere.
