Dave, I over-'heard' a message to you about spinning...you said you're 67
years old? I think that's really great that you're getting out ther and
riding at 67. I plan to be still out ther, getting honked at by all the
little rednecks in pickup trucks, when I'm your age. I'm 43 now, and really
only started to ride with any real regularity and purpose about 4 years ago.
When my doctor told me to get more excercise to help lower the ol' B.P., I
decided to drag the old bike out, and give it a refurb, and get on it. Now, I
have (let's see......) three bikes, and a recumbent in the earliest stages of
construction. I've lost something like 30-35 lbs., and haven't felt this good
since High School.
As for spinning...what you've been hearing from these other folks, I can
also attest to. It takes some getting used to, spinning 80 RPM, but once
there, it feels more natural and 'easier'. Right now, I think, your
cardiovascular system is having to get used to 'burning' more oxygen to keep
your legs going around at the speed. I may get some argument from others on
here about this, but I use the Shimano Biopace type cranks on my bikes (My
knees like them better, contrary to most peoples'). They don't seem to want
you to spin as fast as round rings, for some weird reason. So, if your bike
has those chainrings on it, that may be why it feels alien to you. Still,
though, I finally trained myself to turn them at around 80 RPM. Some folks
spin at 90.
