VW> I was wondering if any nice people out there could give me a low down on

VW> etc... What their advantages/disadvantages (Aside from cost) and what
VW> they are usually used for in recording?
Type 1 - Ferric, or ground-up Ford Cortina. EQ 120uS.
Advantages : It's cheap
Disadvantages : Noisy, almost unusable without Dolby NR.
Typical usage : Walkman, in-car, midi low-fi systems, cheap portables.
Type 2 - Chrome. EQ 70uS
Advantages : Much lower noise than Type 1, better top-end.
Disadvantages : More expensive, needs a half-decent cassette deck
Typical usage : Up-market in-car, decent portables, hi-fi seperates, decent
Walkman etc. Probably the most popular among enthusiasts.
Type 4 - Metal. EQ 70us
Advantages : Very high saturation level, smooth response
Disadvantages : Very expensive, non-oxidised metal wears unsuitable heads.
Typical usage : Audiophiles only!
I think that about sums it all up, I mostly use chromes with the occasional
metal.
