subject: OMC shift problems

-> The room fell silent as Bill Sutton whispered to Dave Brown...

BS> I was hoping that maybe you could help me with this problem. I also
 BS> posted it on alt.rec.boats
Saw it there as well.
 BS> I have a 1987 Bayliner 2450 Ceria Sunbridge with a 260 HP engine and
BS> an OMC outdrive. Last week I could not get the outdrive to shift into
BS> forward without running the RPMs way up and then it stopped going into
BS> forward at all (at any reasonable RPM I ran it up to).
Is the cable red?
BS> A service guy at the gas dock where I was lucky enough to have this

BS> adjusting the cable as a temporary fix. He also said that my "Dog

BS> adjusted it the other way and it seemed to work fine. Went forward

BS> That got me back to the dock where I reversed but then it stayed in
BS> reverse even though the shift was put back in neutral. Again, it took

BS> Before I go on adjusting or replacing a "stretched" cable, I thought
BS> I'd ask for some input and some help.
Definitely needs a cable replacement. Although sometimes referred to as a
stretched cable, what is actually occurring is a loosening of the crimp at
the brass fitting at the drive end of the cable. OMC's newest replacement
cable is twice as thick as the original and now made of stainless steel. DO
NOT USE A JOBBER CABLE in this application. Call me for further info if you
like at 1-613-359-5466 (eastern standard time).
Gotta run,
