I believe there are two settings, it's 3 months over a certain minimum
size. There is also one or two groups where the first few weeks of posts
are somehow stuck (they never purge).

Doesn't really matter to me, seems to hold enough history that everyone
here is happy with it and if anyone wants an archive they can bring up at a
moments notice they are free to archive away.. I'll even load the archives
to the barkto.com website if folks want to share them.
