subject: USR Courier sysop deals ?

TL> modems ? Or at least you might know who to talk to about it ?

BG> Depends on what model Courier you want. If you insist
BG> on Austel approved, there is no longer any local (Qld)
BG> modem dealer I can recommend, but if you don't mind
BG> buying direct from USR, here are their contact
 BG> details...

Don't the Non-Austel ones have a few problems with dial tones or something ?
But also, the US ones get the SDL thingoes first or something ? Could you
tell me the difference between the two ?

 BG> USR BBS ............... 847-982-5092

So this is the one to call to order a US model ?

BG> The US sysop price on a Courier is US$249 plus US$10
BG> shipping (credit cards accepted for purchase). The
BG> modem supplied will be the V.Everything, and is fitted
BG> with a small brass plate which states that the modem is
BG> "not for resale". This plate is also easily removable. :)

Is that the Dual Standard one, or not ? Do they still make two different
models, or do they all have DS now ? Do you know roughly how long it would
take to get from hthere to here ?

BG> Be advised that if you do import one, you'll be stung
BG> another 22% sales tax on the landed cost in A$. Still
BG> much cheaper than local prices though, given the
BG> current exchange rate of around US$0.79 per A$1.00.

Even if I had a tex exemption number, would I still have to pay the 22% tax ?

TL> Would it be cheaper to buy a USR ex tax, or with a sysop deal ? And one
TL> last question ... Roughly how much are they retailing for these days ?

BG> Local RRP is around A$799 although street prices are considerably less.

I think I saw one somewhere for $669 or something ... But also, take the
22% tax off that price, if you can get tax exemption for modems ?

TL> Thanks for any help you can give, and sorry to bother you if you're
not TL> the person to talk to and I got it all wrong! :-)

BG> As far as I know, there is currently no local sysop
BG> deal on USRs, although some dealers may be prepared to
BG> give you a reasonable discount anyway. Best thing to
BG> do is ring a few and ask. Sorry I can't help more.

No probs ... You've been a big help ... Just a few more questions though
... Are there any major difference between the AUS and US models ? Like
would I have to fiddle around alot to get it going ok ? Or do they still
basically just run as well as the AUS model ? And with the 22% sales tax,
when do I have to pay that ? When it arrives, or when I order it ? Can that
be paid by credit card ? And do the US models get new SLDs (?) before the
AUS models ? I heard that the AUS models are always behind in getting them
or something ?

Anyway ... Thanks for your help!!

Tai
