It will be very interesting to know quantitatively what the
"thing" was after grounding and polishing and prior to rouge
treatment by your friend.

Without this the statement about "automatism of sphere" is not
well supported by relevant facts. If you handed to your friend an already
1/20 lambda sphere,
and scared him off of any aggressive handling, his use of rouge had perhaps
not produced perfect sphere but succeeded in not damage one he has already
got.
