Wrong syntax.  You need to enter ATX3 for it to work.

No, not unless you write it to the modem's NVRAM with &W.  When the
modem is powered down, it will revert to the default X4 when turned on
again.

Not sure if you need to use X2 or X3, but assuming the latter, initialise
your Sportster with AT&F1X3&W, then simply use ATZ thereafter.

And I can assure you that this IS clearly detailed in the manual.  :)
