| subject: | Phone plug color codes? |
PM> I'm trying to reconnect an old modem thats got the plug cut PM> off. The phonecord fromthe modem is the 6 way type, all of them are PM> connected at the modem end. This must be one of those well guarded PM> telecom secrets because nobody can tell me the color code for PM> reconnecting a new plug to the cord. I've scanned Inet Uk Telecom, PM> Us stuff etc but our standard telecom plug doesnt seem to be used PM> anywhere else in the world (not the modular one) Has anyone got PM> this information? If you have a 6 wire cable (3 twisted pairs) NORMAL PHONE CABLE pair #1 1. Blue 2. White pair #2 1. Black 2. Red pair #3 1. Green 2. Orange For TYPE # CABLE pair #1 1. Blue/White 2. White/Blue pair #2 1. Orange/White 2. White/Orange pair #3 1. Green/White 2. White/Green On an RJ modular plug the 2 middle ones are use in the US and Aust PINS 3 & 4 (Blue and White) for the building cable and actually Red & Green for the popular Flat modular cable that is used in Aust & US. In the UK they use the ones one the outsides of the two middle ones. ( 2& 5 or 1 & 6, I'm not sure.) But I do know that an American or Australian modem will not work in the UK unless you swap wires at the wall plug. BTW, New Zealand used to use a 6 wire system on there phones 8 or so yrs back, And they may still do that, so ask a KIWI. 2 of their wires were used for switching (Mode 3 maybe) CONFUSED...So you should be, Only authorised Cablers are suppose to do this stuff for you.
