-=>While in the White Hart, Dennis Menard explained to Fred Runk that<=-
DM> -[ Quoting Fred Runk , to Maureen Goldman ]-
MG> Newman starred as Ross McDonald's hero, Harper.
DM> Ross MacDonald's hard-boiled detective, Lew Harper, was California
DM> based. The author, himself, best looked the part of his literary
DM> creation; Newman, in my opinion, did not. Still, the movie was okay.
DM> If you like the Philip Marlowe style of writing, MacDonald is a master
DM> of the genre. His Harper series is comprised of some 20 books, of
DM> which some contain short stories!
Ok, thanks. McGee is Florida, right? Haven't read any of the Marlowe
books, but I'm fairly certain I've seen several movies based, perhaps
loosely, on them.
DM> For myself, I always pictured Robert Conrad for the role of Travis
DM> McGee in T.V./film. Perhaps he's somewhat height challenged for the
DM> part, but Holly- wood has a way of making shorter fellas look taller on
DM> celluloid. My reason for Conrad as McGee? The description by
DM> MacDonald of his creation as having those cold blue eyes and a "deep
DM> water tan." There were 21 T.McGee books in total; I have them, and
DM> have read them, all ... a highly enjoyable series.
DM> Although I've enjoyed Sam Elliott in several of his movies, I simply
DM> can't imagine him as a credible Travis McGee.
How about Newman's eyes--aren't those blue?
Just out of curiosity, many years ago I read a story serialized in the SAT
EVE POST, I think, that had something to do with spies and a nuclear device
on a boat. I've always connected that with McGee for some reason. Are you
familiar with anything even remotely similar to that?
... Is yours a real cat, or does it come when you call it?
