You may or may not have heard about BC's sale of a natural resource
company (Terasen, formerly known as B.C. Gas, a natural gas
exploration/drilling company) to a Texas corporation.
Here's a funny columnist's take on things:
Okay what I've had to do, because I can't recreate the strikeout of the
original, is I'm going to put in {brackets} the text that has a line
drawn through it in the column. . .
This is from Dan Murphy's ( dmurphy{at}png.canwest.com ) column in the
Vancouver (Pravda)Province, Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005
Dear Whatchamacallit
First Draft: A look at an early version of the open letter B.C. got last
week:
Dear people of British Columbia (will this have to be translated into
French? Eskimo? Columbian?),
Greetings from your new {conquerors} friends in Texas.
As you have no doubt heard, we at Kinder Morgan Inc. are busy
{capturing} {liberating} buying B.C.'s natural-gas pipeline from
Terasen.
For anyone in your beautiful {state} {duchy} {bog} province who may be
at all concerned about this {takeover} {grab} mutually beneficial
acquisition, let us immediately send our {tanks} reassurrances.
First of all, we want to dispel some erroneous rumours.
Kinder Morgan is not some rapacious, profit-driven, resource-depleting,
America-centric corporation behemoth from Dallas. We are, in fact,
headquartered in Houston.
There have also been suggestinos that Kinder Morgan has a dodgy safety
and environmental record because of {44 spills over 31 months} a few
scant infractions as noted by {U.S. regulatory agencies} certain
busybodies.
Again, don't be misled. If Kinder Morgan didn't know and care about
B.C.'s unique environment, would we have set up the comprehensive
program outlined on www.penguin-outreach/kindermorgan.org?
The recipe on that page, by the way, is just a joke.
Rest assurred that the natural gas in our pipeline will remain the
property of British Columbians. {Try to get it and you'll find yourself
being interrogated in Syria, but it's yours.}
As far as the notion that once we own the pipeline we'll figure out a
way to shake consumers down for more dough, well, next you'll be tellnig
us you're getting gouged at the gas pump. Ha ha.
So did they change the name of B.C. Gas to Tersasen a couple years back
so it'd sound like Kinder Martin was buying a pair of Danish ski boots
rather than what used to be a citizen-owned public utility?
{We hope so!}
Definitely not!
Thank you for your time. We trust this letter {will pave the way for
Halliburton's takeover of B.C. Hydro} reassure all British Columbians.
{God bless America!}
Yoo hoo to your Queen!
