I missed your question but hope you wont mind my butting in to endorse 
Chris's comments. 
 
I have produced several monographs using Word 5 and have incorporated maps, 
charts and photos with varying and increasing degrees of success. Importing 
graphics into Word works fine but make sure you are not in Print Option Draft 
mode otherwise you will not be able to see your pictures in Print preView. 
 
Output depends on the quality of the input and printer capability. 
 
Go for it - its fun!
