From _The New York Teacher_, March 4, 1996
"The most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress found that
only 38% of the nation's 12th graders could provide adequate written
responses to passages they were asked to read. Only 12 percent provided
elaborated responses on age appropriate writing tasks."
"With achievement test scores in reading causing renewed concerns about
student learning, researchers at the State University of New York at
Albany hope to lead the way in improving language arts skills. The
University has been awarded a $12.5 million federal grant to create a
national research center dedicated to improving English achievement and
teaching.
"The National Research and Development Center on Improving Student
Learning and Achievement in English will seek to identify and encourage
curricula and instructional methods that upgrade achievement in English
in kindergarten through 12th grade, and other subjects in which language
skills are necessary."
"Researchers will conduct 16 studies focusing on the effects of language
arts instruction in the primary grades, English and cross-disciplinary
courses in grades 5 through 12, the role of technology in teaching
English, and professional development of teachers."
