Actually, that's one of the points I am unsure about here myself. When my
grandfather, who was 90-odd years old and had had senile dementia for two
years, was unable to swallow anymore, the nursing home offered the option
of a feeding tube. My grandmother was completely against it, and he died a
few days later.

But nobody had any doubts about his state at the time.
