Kurt,
I would take a guess that your first use of EDLIN was on a computer
with DOS 1.25 on it.
Was I close?
The first clone I had my hands on at work used DOS 2.11 and IIRC
DOS 2.11 was one of the first really good DOS's.
I think that was around 1992 or 1993 when the clone was put where
I could use it.
Before that, at work we first used a TI Terminal with a built-in
Acoustic Modem running at 110 to send our morning river data and
later to get the daily river report.
That was back in the days when my co-workers were told to press
the CTRL key and the G key at the same time.
Boy! did I see a lot of frustrated people trying to mash those two
keys at the same time to Log On to the data center.
Some of them would listen as I told them to use the CTRL key as they
would a SHIFT key and to press the G key after they held down the
CTRL key so they could Ring The Bell and WAKE the computer UP at the
data center.
There were one or two that would give up and let the Junior Guy (Me)
send and get the reports when they were working the same shift I was.
A little later when the main office put a 8 Mc/s XT clone in the
boss's office (the one with DOS 2.11) and we got to use his
Hand Me Down DEC 1200 terminal with an External Acoustic Modem.
At home I was using a (Digital) External VIC Modem 300 on my
Commodore C=64 back then, I used better technology at home than what
I could use at work.
