I've had similar questions. From my point of view
I ask "yes we have a replicating system - but what
is it replicating?"
I think you may be asking a similar question.

My answer is that life is that which survives -
a sun heat cycle. If chemicals and chemical
processes are not stable in that
environment thye don't last. If they are stable
they last and its likely that many variants of them
would last too. Some variants would last longer
than others.
And processes like metabolism (using that
sun energy) or replication (surviving that 
sun cycle into the future) would be
what lasts. And ultimately when life begins
be what is selected in the Darwinian sense.
