Yes, it would certainly help with becoming more comfortable with Linux. 
With me, I initially came into contact with it in 1996 during a semester at
a technical college.  I hated it with passion.  I should explain that in
that learning environment, we were using ancient versions of Linux.  The
most recent of which, at that time, might have been early-90s versions.

The blokes here in Net640 encouraged me to continue the learning process,
and so I've kept with it since.  I'd like to help you similarly.  :)
