I'm using an x-link xl-288I v6.15 (returned by ATI1).

Seems okay to me. I use AT&F2 and AT&R0\G1&W with Terminate
(DOS comm's) and
AT&F&C1&d2\N3 for my Internet connection. None of my strings
are that different
in practice, and I don't think they're your problem.
What operating system are you using? Win95 can have some nasty
"features"
set under the shortcut (.PIF) for DOS terminal programs like "Always
suspend" in Background or Idle sensitivity set to High (CPU `thinks' a
comm's program, say downloading a file in the background is an Idle
program.

Alternately this may just be a case of bad lines, although the
"freezing" sounds a bit more ominous.
