The two major parties do everything they can to shut alternative
candidates out of elections. Ross Perot was an exception in 1992, but he
bought his way into the election.

The Libertarian Party is the third largest party in the country, has been
for over thirty years, and still has to fight to get its candidates on
the ballot - indeed it has to fight to get any recognition from the
people running elections at all.

The two major parties also will not allow a "None of these candidates"
option on the ballots.

That group would include people who don't register to vote - well over
half of the eligible population; and of the somewhat less than half that
does register only about half actually bother to vote. It's not that the
people are stupid or lazy, it's that they won't vote for any of the
candidates presented. And, while it's possible and perfectly legal to
write in a name and vote for that person, the Supreme Court of the United
States ruled - in 1994 - that write-in votes don't have to be counted.
The court actually said that not counting those write-in votes does not
disenfranchise the voters who did it - logic and common sense being
noticeably absent from that decision.
