Thank you.

My point is that there is a point in every episode where they say
"We're doing this on our way to that"  when an adventure comes
and finds them.  Or what they're doing turns out not to be what they think.

I have developed some broad categories and described the Enterprise-Prime's
missions in these categories as each episode starts

one categpory that's too big is "Exploration"  which entails
everything from entering unknown space,  to beaming down landing parties to
surveys,  to running down what happened to disappeared old starships.

Another Category that gets a lot of use is "Search and Rescue"
responding to distress calls, answering cries for help

Another category is "Diplomacy" where the starship if carrying
diplomats along for diplomatic reasons.

One that needs help though is Hostile Encounter

because in some ways a starship in combat mode works.  "Balance of Terror"

In other ways it winds up not being terribly relevant "Spectre of the Gun"

and in some,  like "Return of the Archons" or "Devil in the
Dark"  the results of full-on military response would be tragic.

But that's too specific for my purpose here

based on what I am seeing so far  Military ships in starfleet are too
limited.  They have ther places, in the lines of battle

But most of what we see the Flagship of the Federation doing is really
multitasking stuff
