To clarify, my experience wiH EDLIN was with work computers where I needed
to edit files on someone else's system to update them. My first home
computer was an XT clone in 1986. I forget what DOS that was running, but
it was whatever version was the first to support hard disks.

My first mind-blowing PC experience was seeing CAD rendering on a Compaq
286 with an 80287 math co-processor. I tried the same on my XT and it took
a minute and a half. 10 seconds on the 286/287 combo.
