Adding to the confusion, I know I've also run into Aspergers being
considered a spectrum of sorts, too... but perhaps not quite so wide a
one as the autism...

For that matter, having it run in both families would increase the odds
of the children getting it...  And high-functioning autistic people are
less likely to be diagnosed, unless something else grabs attention. 
Besides which, in earlier generations, less was known about it, less was
diagnosed, etc.
