Yes, Custom Built uses Maestro modems, but I don't know which model.? 
Since I wrote the original message above, I have changed my init string
a bit, and I seem to be able to get onto Custom Built now, but still get
the occasional dropout, which indicates to me I haven't solved the problem
properly. The other alternative is, that the modem has an intermittant
fault??????????
