There's already a thing called ModemBlaster, which I've already heard
someone proclaim 'the best V.34 modem they've ever used' .. but I'm waiting
on more info before I get even half that excited ..

Apparently it's an add-on for one of the fancier DSP SB cards.  Same sort
of thing has been done on the PowerMacs, with their GeoPort .. basically a
non-dedicated DSP and support chips that you can make various audio gadgets
with .. and a modem is just a fancy bit of signal processing / generation,
with some clever software :)
