Here's a summary of the the chief of police of Hamburg said:
Priority 1 was to make sure there are no incidents at the building where the
summit happend and that went fine. Priority 2 was to make sure the protesters
and the residents of Hamburg are safe and so far that seems to have worked,
too.
What did not work as expected was separating trouble seekers from a group of
far-left protesters. When the police tried to do that, too many managed to
climb the flood protection wall and got away. The worst part seems to have
happened when the police had to create a safe corridor for the attendees of the
summit and didn't have enough man power left. And they showed footage from the
helicopter where you can see people on the rooftops tossing things and lighting
a molotow cocktail before they get to meet special forces.
Meanwhile, a group of far-left automous people living nearby said that this
went way too far, but I'm not sure if they really mean it. People on roofs
seems to be a novelty, however, those people from the footage are probably not
going to see any roofs for a couple of years, but I'm afraid that won't scare
away others.
While I don't know about the shops' insurance, the more expensive cars usually
have full insurance, so the rich people don't lose anything, while the poorer
ones probably saved money on insurance and don't have vandalism covered. So in
case this was suppsed to be anti-capitalist, it would be even dumber than it
already is.
