subject: Soundblaster Modem!!!

IS> There's already a thing called ModemBlaster, which I've
IS> already heard someone proclaim 'the best V.34 modem
IS> they've ever used' .. but I'm waiting on more info
IS> before I get even half that excited ..

TL> Not sure if it's called ModemBlaster. Maybe PhoneBlaster is
TL> more like it :) I think it's made by Creative Labs (You'd
TL> never guess by the name :)) and comes in 14.4 and 28.8
 TL> flavours.

That's the one. I wasn't taking any but mental notes at the time :) He
said he'd always used and recommended Hayes modems up to that point. I
don't think he was trying to sell me one, just enthusing about its
performance, esp. ISD.

IS> Apparently it's an add-on for one of the fancier DSP SB
IS> cards. Same sort of thing has been done on the
IS> PowerMacs, with their GeoPort .. basically a non-
IS> dedicated DSP and support chips that you can make
IS> various audio gadgets with .. and a modem is just a
IS> fancy bit of signal processing / generation, with some
 IS> clever software :)

TL> Maybe we're talking about different hardware here, but I
 TL> don't think this one is an add-on, it's a whole sb16 or
TL> something with 14.4 or 28.8 modem. Costs something in the
 TL> $400's or maybe $500's for the 28.8 model too I beleive.

Same gadget. This guy (who builds high-end Pentiums and rents videos for a
crust :) told me it was using the SB (AWE?) DSP chips and Creative's
software, not any Rockwell or such chip, to implement the modem. So it's
add-on in the sense of being additional to soundcard functions. Isn't that
correct?
