Here in Australia we are seeing a REALLY alarming story on just this theme.

A young woman (Schapelle Corby) got on a Qantas plane at Brisbane. The
plane flew to Bali via Sydney. Schapelle had a zipped bag in her luggage
which was found to contain 4kg of marijuana. She is on trial in Bali, and
has been locked up for seven months so far. At one time she faced the death
penalty, but now life imprisonment seems likely.

The big question is why would anyone take drugs worth (say) $60,000 in
Australia to Bali, where you could buy the same thing for (say) $4,000?

It appears very likely that the answer is that drug rings in Australia have
found that a convenient way to get drugs from Brisbane to Sydney is to have
a baggage handler in Brisbane slip a package in someone's luggage. They
then phone the luggage number through to a colleage working in Sydney, who
removes the package. Something went wrong, and Schapelle got hit.

Among the evidence supporting this theory is a couple who went on TV to
claim that they found a package of drugs in their luggage in Bali (which is
a popular holiday site). The local Australian consulate told them to throw
the drugs away and under NO circumstances approach the local police.

The complacency of our authorities is ASTOUNDING.
