I've seen some speculation, but I don't know of any explanation that
handles the transition from "not alive" to "alive".
Some people find the statement "an intelligent designer did it"
helpful, but that is not what I would regard as an explanation.

It's certainly true that evolution does involve changes from very simple
life forms that may result in some very complex life forms. However, most
bacteria has evolved into other forms of bacteria or similar. Molecular
evidence shows, in all examples tested so far, that *all* life on earth is
essentially variations on one theme.

Any serious thought shows that once you have creatures capable of
reproduction, it is inevitable that evolution will occur.
