subject: Connection Problems

Hello Bill,

BG> That's the new internal PnP model, but with the earlier ROM code (the
BG> later model is apparently buggy, and has problems with V.42bis
 BG> lockups).

Yes, I have seen many postings from people with problems as above, and
wondered why I wasn't having the same problem.

BG> As I said before, If you're issuing AT&F1X3&W correctly whilst in
BG> terminal mode, but the ATI4 screen still shows X4, your modem is
 BG> faulty.
BG> You should also only be using that init string once in terminal mode
BG> BTW, then calling it from Telix with ATZ (reset to stored NVRAM
 BG> values).

The penny dropped! When firing up Telix, and inputting ati4, "X4" is shown,
BUT, if I then input "atz", "x3" shows up. IE the modem
is not faulty.

BG> V.34+ can be too aggressive with some other V.34 modems, and the only
BG> fix I currently know is to disable the 3429 symbol rate on your USR
BG> for those calls to boards where you know it's a problem. To do this,
BG> you simply change your dialling string for those boards to ATS54=96DT.

Problem, that command is not accepted, and results with "error"? I notice
in the manual, that s38 is the highest value??

BG> When your modem resets after the call, it will also reset that
BG> register to its default S54=64.

After another aborted handshake to Custom Built BBS, I looked at my ATI6
screen, and the message for "disconnect reason" was, "XID
timeout"
I changed the default value of S28 register from 008 to 012, and that seems
to have given me access to Custom Built BBS? Any comment on that change.
Once again Bill thanks for your time.
Regards...............Warwick.
