that can be said about ANY program you want running in the background on dos...

ruby runs fine on dos as is. but if you wanted it monitoring log files,
you'd either put it in a batch file run during your maintenance, or use a
multi-tasker if you wanted it done realtime

the installer is for installing ruby...it just makes it easier than the
standard version

yes. that's what i'm doing here.

at least one of the ruby wrappers are cross platform (not sure about the
other). the third one i have is a generic windows wrapper (could be used
for any language)

obviously the cross-platform one i use still needs a host machine to
generate the executable. standalone executables on linux aren't foolproof,
so it's just easier to give someone the code...

most people running linux with any degree of seriosity (tm) can already
program to some degree...they usually aren't my target audience :)
