If you are a beginner, I would advise against a master controller, especially
if you were planning on using a soundcard as the synth source, especially if
you don't already have a wavtable card.
Buy a cheap gm keyboard, good buys on used keyboards, then either a midi
adapter for whatever kind of computer... and some software...
Buy the best you can afford, roland, korg, yamaha [although I do not like the
psr "consumer" series] tend to have good resale, and decent numbers of users
to support... I lean very heavily towards roland, and they have nice gm
keyboards with soundcanvas synth sounds... gm is very good as it will enable
you to play most of the stuff you can find on the net, latter you will
probably abandon gm to get the sounds that fit with whatever type of music
you are into, but it is always handy to have something general midi arround
[gm]
If you already play piano the action may be important in choosing a keyboard,
if not, it is lesser... I am primarily a guitar player, and you can use a
midi pickup on a guitar to get sounds in... or you can use the pc keyboard
and type away...
guess that's enough of a beginning, I suspect others may have something also
to share...

Richard.
