Hello Neil -

NH>> Gosh, one of my favorite leisure activities is memorizing
NH>> the telephone book.

CA>> I sort of did that for awhile programming automated
CA>> telephone systems but only for Michigan. :-)

NH> This is a perfect example of what I was talking about.

--8<--cut

NH> I was completely facetious and off-the-wall. Your response,
NH> OTOH, seemed sober and well considered.

Yes, I realized that you weren't serious. My reference to the
reality that some of us do indeed find ourselves in somewhat
unusual circumstances was a bit of 'dry' humor although
entirely true.

NH> Considering that we share the same language and culture, it
NH> would seem reasonable to assume that misunderstandings
NH> would easily arise if two conversationalists were from
NH> different cultures and had different levels of familiarity
NH> with the language being used.

Misunderstandings do happen between persons from different
cultures, yes. There are various 'taboos' that are not always
obvious and peculiarities where the men are the maternal parent
more so than the mother etc.

Opportunities for error abound. If all of the people in the
discussion avoid comments that are too very personal, comments
about religion, and avoid slang, euphorisms, and idioms then
the discussion usually continues with few misunderstandings.

Humor or more correctly witticisms based on an intimate
understanding of the subject being ridiculed should probably be
avoided.
