TR> And nobody around here knows that I sometimes carry one in my pants

What is car hijacking? Does someone enter on the passenger side or the backseat
and tell you to go to a different country, like on a plane?
Or is it a robbery of your car? Wouldn't your insurance policy cover that?
TR> they happen all the time.
I can hardly imagine that. How much is that in incidents per 100,000 residents
per year?
Wouldn't it be less dangerous to just steal them with a tow truck?
TR> I watch

Sounds more like Afghanistan, Syria or the Ukraine.
TR> The nearest cop is about 40 minutes or more in response to a 911 call

Which means law enforcement is non-existing. But that makes me think of
military strategies again and then it's all about firepower. The firing side
advances, the other side stays in the dugouts. Since you stated that criminals
don't care about gun laws, they probably have some belt-fed machine guns and
can legally buy truckloads of ammunition. Then how does your shotgun help you?
