Saucer separattion is mainly a way to slow stories down and inconvinience writers.
I used the Galaxy's separation ability twice in a role playing game, and it
did the same thing, (Slowed the game down, and gave the GM more to keep
track of.) the first time it took so long to arrange that the Battle
section was late to the engagement and wound up being a rescue vehicle.
The second time, the Saucer section wound up vulnerable to attack while
the battle section went out and smeared bad guys.
I stopped using it after that, and I am sure most Stafleet Captains would,
too, except as a last resort. It's a clever idea that only works well
under very specific circumstances.
Also. Troi made a good emergency landing. The Saucer section was heavily
damaged from the fighting and subsequent destruction of the battle
section.
