The Japanese were simply defending their ideals etc in December 1941.

Maybe they thought they could wipe out the fleet, achieve Pacific dominance
& the US would just grumble a bit.

How can you surrender from a course of action which your own gov has
repeatedly said you're not pursuing?

A war with Iran would probably last 3-5 years & would completely bugger
up central asia & the Persian Gulf region.
