For a spindle, you may want to go to my new page on spindles and grinding machines for ideas on a nice machine size to grind small lenses like you have done. A motor turning a hundred rpm or a bit more will probably do just fine. You can always look at how fast that your drill was turning and use that speed as near the max spped and put a speed controller onto a DC motor to allow for slower work. If you really want to have some fun, try using your Foucault tester to see throguh the flat side of the glass and see what the shape of the curved surface is. You may be supprised at how crude it may be.
